BT-1 BASIC Tester is the simplest and cheapest combustion leak tester on the market but still a quite effective tool for detecting medium combustion leaks in engines with liquid cooling systems. Bear in mind that the tester will not detect small leaks, the sensitivity is too low.  Also, the lack of filtering could lead to false test results, the test fluid might not change colour due to possible contaminants.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

If a combustion leak is present, a small amount of exhaust gases is leaking into the cooling system. These gases can be detected with this simple tester.

BLUE OR RED TEST FLUID, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

Sensitivity is the main difference between blue and red fluid. Diesel engines have different exhaust gas composition (before catalyzer), lower level of co2, higher nitrates and carbon. 

The blue fluid is not suitable for DIESEL engines as it changes colour to GREEN, making it more confusing with the interpretation of the test result.  The red liquid should be used instead. In diesel engines, the red fluid simply performs better.
